A small boy lives in an abusive household where he repeatedly watches his father beat his mother. One night the parents have an extremely bad fight. There is a lightning storm. The father punches out the mother to reveal the boy standing in horror in the doorway. At night when the mother is tucking her boy into bed she tells him a bedtime story. The story is about a little boy like him who is unhappy with his life. In the story the boy makes a pact with a dove king and is granted wings so that he can fly away and be happy. The mother kisses her boy and tells him to go to sleep.
The boy spends the entire next day outside searching for the dove king. "Where are you?!" He is turning over rocks, climbing trees, and looking under his porch. The boy them runs into the woods until he is out of breathe and stops to cry. While the boy is crying the dove king appears to him. "You were looking for me?" The king agrees to give the boy wings in exchange for three giant juicy worms. One of the worms is found on top of the mountain behind the boys house. One of the worms is found in a well. The last worm is found in a nearby cave. The boy returns with the worms and the king is very satisfied. He grants the boy his wish.
The next day the mother is yelling for the boy to get up for school. She doesn't hear a reply from him that he is getting ready so she goes to check on him. When she opens the door she finds his room neat and tidy. The boy's bed is made. On the bed she finds a single white feather. She picks up the feather and begins to cry.
