Relationship Focus Comic

We were instructed to create a comic that focused on a relationship between two characters. I tried to do some characterization by making the two main characters a Chinese mom and her son. I think it came out somewhat racist. But hopefully in a fun, and non-offensive way.

Summary – Quon An is a Chinese boy in early twenties. His hair black cut short, and he is fairly thin and muscular. He works with his mother, Bo Hua, for an extermination service. Bo Hua is in her early sixties, and looks like a very traditional Chinese mother. She is a very strong woman. Their family moved to America after Quon’s father recently received citizenship. In the story they are on a house call at a one-story ranch house that is secluded on a grassy. There is a dirt road that runs past the house.

Page 1 (5 panel layout)

Panel 1

Quon and Bo pull up in beat up ’94 Ford pickup truck. Both characters are wearing bright orange jumpsuits. The truck is aluminum colored and rusted. On the top of the truck sits a beat up, oversized panda bear bust. The hood of the truck is painted to read, “Paper Hot Panda Extermination.” Quon and Bo are seen through glass looking out at us. Quon is looking at clipboard in her hands.

Bo – “Wat we got today?”

Quon – “Hoi. Anacondas!”

Panel 2

Quon makes a face of horror and shock as if to say, “are you kidding me?”

Panel 3

Bo is holding a Howa Co2 bolt action rifle up to her body. Looking very stern.

Bo – “Dtat’s zright! Lessgo mister!”

Panel 4

Bo and Quon are walking from their truck to the front porch of the house. Bo is in front with a PNEU-DART Model 179B Breech Loading Pistol, walking with sense of disipline and strength. Quon is walking behind his mother with a big cage in one hand and his mother’s rifle in the other hand. Quon appears to be shuffling his feet, and he drags the rifle on the ground behind him as he walks.

Panel 5

Bo is knocking very forcefully on door.

Panel 1

Bo is suddenly panicked with fear. She is tense as if looking for what she should be doing. She can hear Quon’s screams still coming from under the porch.

Quon – “AHH! AHH!”

Bo – “What?! Quon?! You come here!”

Panel 2

Quon bursts out from under the porch. He is struggling against the snake, who has completely wrapped itself around him. Bo has her hanggun raised to aim at the snake but is shaking terribly.

“Thud!”

Panel 5

Bo takes a second shot at the snake. The snake is still covering Quon, who has now passed out face first on the ground. The gun makes a popping sound as it is fired.

“POP!”

Panel 6

The snake somewhat released Quon in agony. It lets out an angry hiss.

Snake – “HIISSS!”

Page 5 (4 panel layout)

Panel 1

We see Bo driving home in the truck through the windshield. It is nighttime. She is looking out at us.

Bo – “Such quiet boy! So handsome!”

Panel 2

We see the rest of the cab of the truck through the windshield. It’s as if the last panel was taken and then zoomed out. Bo is still driving and has her head turned looking at Quon. Bo has a pleased look on her face. Quon is one the other side of the vehicle passed out with his head on the side window. He is drooling and his face is slightly contorted. In the middle of the truck between the two characters sits the snake coiled up. It’s eyes are both closed. Above the snake on a rack is Bo’s rifle.

Panel 3

This panel is illustrated the same as the last one, with the exception that Bo is now looking at the snake who’s head she is now holding up at shoulder height.

Bo – “And we have dinna!”

Panel 4

The truck is seen somewhat overhead driving away from us at a three-quarter angle, down a dirt road. The headlights, and taillights light up the vehicle. Bo’s laughter is seen coming out of her window as the truck speeds off. The laughter is almost maddening.

Bo – “RA RA RA RA RA!!”
