Tsarevitch Ivan, the Firebird and the Grey Wolf

This was from the third week in class. We were told to pick a fairy tale and transition the story into a 6-8 page comic. I wanted to find a story that no one else would try to tell. I believe the story is a Russian fairy tale.


Setting: Medieval Russian kingdom in the countryside

Page 1 (6 page break)

Panel 1

A fancy Russian castle is centered. Trees create circular composition around castle, with a single golden apple hanging down from a branch.

“A King’s apple tree bore golden apples.”

Panel 2

Tree centered. Two guards in chainmail stand on either side of the tree obviously confused. One looking up at sky, the other away and scratching head.

“Every night a firebird stole a golden apple from the tree.”

Panel 3

Throne room. King centered sitting on throne, crown on head. His oldest two sons kneel before him.

“The King sent his two oldest sons to catch the firebird.”

Panel 4

Tree centered. The two sons are sleeping on either side of the tree. Elegant, long, tail of the firebird is seen flying off one side of panel.

“But they fell asleep.”

Panel 5

King facing back to reader. Background has youngest son, Ivan in mail armor addressing King with pointer finger up in exclamation.

“Ivan Tsarevitch, his youngest son, asked to try.”

Panel 6

Firebird and scene setup are same as panel 4. Except that Ivan is diving through the air with his hands on the tail of the firebird.

“Ivan successfully caught a tail feather.”

Panel 1

Tree is full of golden apples.

“The bird never came back.”

Panel 2

King is in throne room seated on throne. His face is resting on his hand like in deep thought. Obviously depressed.

“In time, the King longed for the bird.”

Panel 3

Kingdom and castle in view.

“He gave orders that whoever should catch the firebird would be his heir.”

Panel 4

The three brothers side by side mounted on horses. The horses are in a grassy meadow, and there is a headstone in front of them.

“The three brothers set out”

“and soon came to a stone.”

Panel 5

Close up of stone. Writing in stone looks hand carved and states:

One road leads to hunger and cold

One road leads to life for you, and death for your horse

One road leads to death for you, and life for your horse

Panel 6

Ivan is mounted on horse going down dark path with overgrown trees.

“The older brothers could not decide and left Ivan, who took the second road.”

Panel 1

Ivan is exhausted leaning up against a tree.

“A wolf ate Ivan’s horse.”

“He walked through exhaustion”

Panel 2

Ivan riding on wolf’s back like horse through heavily wooded area.

“The wolf offered to carry him.”

Panel 3

Ivan is talking to wolf who is sitting listening patiently. They are in a beautiful garden.

“Ivan was carried to the garden of the firebird.”

Panel 4

Golden cage which contains firebird.

“Ivan was told to take the bird, but to the golden cage.”

Panel 5

Ivan has hands in air. Two armed guards with pikes have them press against Ivan. The bird in it’s cage are on the ground next to Ivan.

“Ivan could not resist and was captured.”

Panel 6

Ivan in cowered in front of a dark king. The king has a sword pressed to Ivan’s neck.

“Ivan could be spared if he would retrieve the horse with the golden mane.”

Panel 1

Ivan is talking with the wolf in the garden.

“Ivan met the wolf again, who took him to the kingdom where the horse was kept.”

Panel 2

Beautiful white horse is pictured with a golden saddle.

“The wolf told Ivan to leave the golden bridle when taking the horse.”

Panel 3

Like Page 2 panel 5, Ivan has hands in air with guards in same position. This time they are in different armor of the third kingdom and have bows. The horse is behind Ivan.

“Again Ivan could not resist.”

Panel 4

Ivan is cowering before a king. King has sword to Ivan’s neck.

“This king promised to spare Ivan if he could capture Helen the Beautiful.”

Panel 5

Ivan is riding the wolf off through a clearing.

“Ivan rode the wolf to Helen’s castle.”

Panel 6

Ivan and Helen are riding the wolf together through woods.

“Ivan brought Helen back to the second king.”

Panel 1

Ivan and Helen are holding hands outside castle with their foreheads pressed together.

“But Ivan had fallen in love with Helen.”

Panel 2

Wolf is transforming into princess.

“The wolf turned itself into the princess.”

Panel 3

Second king centered. Ivan stands before king with Helen. They hold hands, and Ivan is giving her to the king.

“Ivan gave the wolf to the King in exchange for the horse with the golden mane.”

Panel 4

Ivan and Helen are riding off from the castle on the horse.

“Ivan and Helen rode off on the horse.”

Panel 5

Second king is sleeping in his big bed. Wolf disguised as the princess is sneaking out the window.

“The wolf escaped the king.”

Panel 6

Ivan is knocking on a big castle door. He has the reins to the horse with the golden mane in his hand and the horse is standing behind him.

“At the other kingdom, Ivan exchanged the wolf again as the horse for the firebird.”

Panel 1

Ivan is riding the horse with Helen, and the birdcage with the bird.

“Ivan returned home with the Fire bird, the horse, and Helen.”

Panel 2

Ivan and Helen are sleeping under a tree together, laid up against the base. The birdcage is also under the tree, and the horse is standing nearby.

“The two older brothers found Ivan and Helen resting under a tree.”

Panel 3

The two brothers are stabbing Ivan who is in a mortified and dead pose. Helen is screaming in horror with tears coming down her cheeks.

“They killed Ivan and cut him up into pieces.”

Panel 4

The two brothers are pointing their swords at Helen, who is still sobbing.

“Forcing Helen to cooperate, the brothers stole Ivan’s credit for his accomplishments.”

Panel 5

The brothers have both been crowned and sit upon thrones. They are both laughing with extreme joy. One has his legs up in the air rolling with laughter, and the other is slapping his knee.

“The second son became the King’s heir: the first was to marry Helen.”

Panel 6

The wolf is standing under the tree where Ivan was murdered. There are bits of Ivan thrown about. There are also two baby crows eating at Ivan.

“But the wolf found Ivan, and was not pleased.”

Page 7 (6 page break)

Panel 1

The wolf has cornered the two baby crows that were eating on Ivan. He has a snarl on his face.

“He caught two crows feeding on Ivan.”

Panel 2

A mother crow is standing in between the two babies and the wolf. She is on her knees pleading.

“The mother pleaded for their lives.”

Panel 3

The mother crow is flying with a bucket in her mouth.

“The wolf sent her to fetch the water of death.”

Panel 4

The wolf is pouring the bucket of water on Ivan’s body that is in pieces. The pieces are gathered together.

“This restored Ivan’s body.”

Panel 5

The mother crow is flying in another direction with the bucket in her mouth.

“The mother then retrieved the water of life.”

Panel 6

The wolf is pouring a bucket of water on Ivan’s body, which is not put back together.

“This restored Ivan’s life.”

Panel 1

Ivan is standing in a double doorway. His arms are extended to hold the doors open as he looks forward towards us.

“Ivan stopped the wedding.”

Ivan – “Stop!”

Panel 2

The wolf has wounded both brothers and is playing with them.

“The wolf slaughtered the older brothers.”

Panel 3

Ivan and Helen are standing together holding hands before a priest.

“Ivan married Helen…”

Panel 4

View of the castle, bird’s eye view.

“And lived happily ever after.”
